CPT Step 5: Data Analysis Proposal

             Now we are living in 21st century and the effectiveness of technology, such as mobile phones, has been discussed or a long period of time. Some people may think that these technology has negative effects. One of the most representative case is using mobile phone while driving. This action will distract driving, results in the fatal accidents. There are a lot of functions, as we call them smartphones. Mobile phone’s basic functions—texting and calling —are the major reasons that lead the distracted driving which causes a fatal car crash. In order to prevent the car accident caused by the distracted driving, governments made the law prohibiting texting while driving including Canada. However, all of these depend on drivers and their attitude. My research focuses on proving that texting ban in Ontario will not reduce significant amount of the death from collisions with the similar penalty with the United States. The results of my survey (primary sources) show that most people think that mobile phone is part of their life and it’s hard to live without it. A lot of people still use mobile phone even after the law prohibiting texting while driving has been made. My secondary sources show that the law regarding distracted driving is not effective in the United States, which indicates that the law in Canada will not be effective with the similar penalty with the United States. For instance, in the United States, texting ban were associated with a 3% reduction in traffic fatalities. On the other hand, the car crash regarding distracted driving increased in some States. I will expect that most people, especially old people will agree on the riskiness of using mobile phone while driving since their child’s driving habit will take an important roles in their lives, and this will lead to the necessity of strengthening the texting ban.

             After collecting the data and show it in the form of pie chart, we will see that about 80% of the people think that texting ban in Ontario is effective enough. However, majority of people still believe that strengthening the law will decrease the huge amount of a fatal car crash regarding distracted driving. I expect that, as time passes, the percentage of people who agree will keep increasing and disagree will keep decreasing due to the increasing amount of technologies that are invented and are used in more ways in our society. Also, we know that nowadays most people have their own mobile phones and it is hard to live without them. However, using mobile phones while driving affect not only your life, but also others’. Therefore, effectiveness of texting ban is very important in our society and helpful to make a safe environment for everyone.
