Data Management CPT: Project Proposal

Topic:

             The study of the relationship between texting bans and death from collisions.

Description of the study:

             The topic that I am choosing to research about deals with the law prohibiting texting while driving. Nowadays, it is hard to find a people who do not have a mobile phone. Also, it is common to drive a car as well since the drivers license is allowed for teenagers who are over 16. Due to these reasons, from 2000 to 2013, the deaths from collisions that is caused from using electronic devices became double. 1 of 6 deaths from collisions are caused due to the mobile phone. So, in 2015, Ontario made the law against distracted driving that The United States had since 2008. In the United States, the texting bans did not cut crashes. The penalty in Canada is little bit higher to compare with the United States. However, they are similar. So, it is clear that texting bans in Ontario will have similar effect as the United States. The purpose of this project is to determine how much of an effect did the law prohibiting texting while driving in the United States have on the number of car accidents related with texting while driving since then. The focus of my project will be on how the law of distracted driving in Ontario has to change to be effective by comparing with the case in United States.

Why I chose this topic:

             The reason why I chose this topic is because I got my G2 license recently. In 2015, Canada made the law prohibiting texting while driving. Car crash does not only happen because of me, but also because of others as well. So I thought it would be best if texting bans are effective. That is the reason why I paid attention to the texting bans in the United States which are made in 2008. Since both the United States and Canada have similar conditions, such as the penalty regards this law in both Canada and the United States are similar, I want to determine the situation that the United States faced after texting bans and how Canada should handle the law prohibiting texting while driving.

Thesis:

             Twelve per cent of deaths from collisions is due to distracted driving in the United States, however, the law that was placed in 2008 regarding distracted driving and texting during driving, has not reduced the overall amount of crashes ever since.

Hypothesis:

             The number of fatal car accidents related distracted driving in the United States had not cut crashes after outlawry of distracted driving around 2008. There is no clear way to determine how texting ban in Ontario will reduce the death from collisions with the similar penalty with United States.
